India sends senior emissary as political impasse deepens in Nepal

With the major political parties engaged in desperate efforts to end the current political impasse, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department of India's ruling Congress (I) Karan Singh arrived in Kathmandu on Friday.

The senior Congress leader Singh, who is titular Maharaja of Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, is considered a well known Nepal hand. He was also India's special envoy to Nepal during former king Gyanendra led royal regime back in 2006.

Leaders of Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist met President Ram Baran Yadav at the latter's office, Shital Niwas, expressing their dissatisfaction for not involving them in the political negotiations.



In the meeting, UCPN-M vice chairman C.P Gajurel and spokesperson Pampha Bhusal also said the decisions of meetings of the four other parties were not acceptable to them and that they were being ignored by the President's Office in the talks taking place in the recent weeks.

The increasing Chinese influence in southern Nepal is proving to be a big worry for India's security establishment, according to a report published in the online edition of India Today magazine.

China is running study centres, promoting radio stations and pumping huge amounts of money in various projects to apparently further its anti-India campaign, said the report that recently appered in in the weekly magazine considered to be close to the Indian establishment.
